"Updating All" times out

I’ve been dealing with this for a long time and tried everything I could find about it.

I manage about a dozen small sites. When I log into the MainWP dashboard and click Update All, the window opens and updating begins normally. Then, somewhere between 30 and 60 seconds, it just stops. The progress bar stops moving (though the animation keeps going), and the arrow keeps spinning next to any incomplete sites, and it just sits there. Eventually, after I’m sure there won’t be any more action, I’ll click the Close button, and the dashboard will refresh and show that some (but usually not all) of the updates have completed. Then I have to repeat the process, sometimes two or three times, to install the rest of the updates.

Any ideas why this always (unless there are only a couple updates) times out?

I have a similar thing happening except that the updates have all taken place correctly but has not updated the window and as you say - seems to stick!

Please check your Child Sites System Report to see if your WordPress Memory Limit & cURL Timeouts are set correctly. Your most likely set to only 30 or 60 seconds. If they are not set correctly, please add these two lines to your wp-config file:

Always happens if the dashboard is idle for too long. Just refresh or sync prior to updating anything.

A good idea, but I have always synced the sites first and then within a matter of seconds proceeded with the updates. As often happens this seems to be something that has crept up slowly and its not always the same sites that have the problem!

I put define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’); in the config file for all child sites and the MainWP dashboard site, and set the following via php.ini:
max_execution_time = 300
max_input_time = 300
default_socket_timeout = 300

I confirmed these setting in the MainWP server report in each site, but still no change. The updating screen still stalls out somewhere between 30 and 60 seconds, and if there are more than a few updates they don’t all get done until I close the window and restart the updates.

Hi @johnm, next time when you trigger the update process, can you try to open your browser console and watch if some error shows at the moment the process stalls?
Also it could be helpful to find after how much time the process stalls.

This sounds to me like either the MainWP > Settings > Advanced Options need to be tweaked & or the Optimization option on MainWP > Settings > Global Options need to be turned on or off.

Okay, I had to wait for a batch of updates to try again. This time I enabled the Chrome Console before starting the updates. After about thirty seconds it started throwing 504 (Gateway Timeout) errors, and after another minute or so they switched to 503 (Service Unavailable) errors.

I saved the log file of the first run (it took three to finish the updates, but I don’t see a way to attach it here.

Hi @johnm, thanks for sharing that info. This does seem like a server side problem.
The server stops executing the admin-ajax.php script, but I don’t know which server rule does this so it may be best to simply contact your host support and have them check why this happens and if possible they should increase the execution time limit.

Thanks Bogdan. I did some googling and was pointed to the Apache Timeout setting, which turned out to be set at 20 instead of the default 300. I changed it to 300 and will report back here next time I have a batch of updates.

No change, still getting 504 Gateway Timeout Errors after 20 to 30 seconds. Back to the drawing board…

I found the “Maximum simultaneous install and update requests” setting in MainWP, and set it to 1 (from 3). Will report back whether that changes anything next time.
